Fixed or Removable
By Jeffrey Crews, D.M.D.
Almost everyone is familiar with the attached or fixed dental appliances commonly referred to as “braces.” There are, however, a wide variety of tooth movement appliances that are removable. Appliances of this latter type are made of plastic and metal and are held on the teeth by their close fit or by special wire clasps. Successful treatment with removable appliances is totally dependent upon patient compliance. Removable appliances tend to be relatively easy to keep clean, but precise tooth movement may not be possible. Braces, on the other hand, offer the aävantage of more precise control of tooth movement. Scrupulous attention to oral hygiene, is a necessity for the wearer of braces. The appliances can trap food particles, making good brushing somewhat more difficult, and more important than ever.
Orthodontic treatment, whether done with fixed or removable appliances is a smart way to improve one’s personal appearance, increase self-esteem, and promote healthier teeth and a more comfortable bite. The first step in determining the right kind of orthodontic treatment, for yourself or a family member, is to learn as much about your condition as possible. Please call 291-2901 for additional information about orthodontic treatment.
P.S. - The “retainer” is probably the most often used type of removable appliance, usually worn after braces are removed in order to preserve the dental correction.
